Clarke Birrell graduated from UMW with a business administration degree in 2013. Since then, his first two jobs have landed him in France and then the Ivory Coast. Back from Cote D'Ivoire and happy I pushed my limits with a 3 month international internship in Africa for the Agribusiness company SIFCA. Côte d'Ivoire is a country of 20 million people in West Africa bordered by Ghana, Liberia, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea. It is a Francophone country with many ethnicities and over 60 tribal languages. An important aspect to note is that Côte d'Ivoire is coming out of two civil wars. They lasted from (2002 - 2007) and (2010 - 2011). The College of Business recently took a Learning Journey to GEICO, who graciously hosted a group of forty students and faculty. Founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin, GEICO became a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, headed by Warren Buffett, in 1996. Embarking on this journey for a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s headquarters in Fredericksburg, were students from Dr. Nichole Phillips class and the pre-business living learning community. The group was greeted by Brittany Thompson, Regional College Recruiter for the district of Fredericksburg, and given a tour of the facility. The field trip to GEICO was very informative, giving the group an inside perspective for staying competitive in the insurance industry. Dr. Wei Chen, assistant professor in the College of Business, accompanied several students from UMW to China this summer for a two-month internship and travel program as part of an Environment of International Business Seminar course. France and then the Ivory Coast. That is where my two first jobs have been since graduating from Mary Washington with a business degree in 2013! In France I was an English teaching assistant in a public high school in the suburbs of Paris. Every year through the TAPIF program (you should apply) 4,000 native English speakers are hired by the French government and placed in public schools throughout the country. This was my first real experience teaching and it is not an easy job. Just remember to stay calm because kids are like sharks, if they smell fear it is over. But, don’t worry it is a great job! You work only 12 hours/week and just have to plan lessons focused on conversation (so, no grammar). The other teachers at the high school were very supportive and the students were nice on the whole.
