Let Your Experiences Create Your Path

Written by: Darrell Graf, class of 2004, Vice President at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Structure Real Estate Finance Throughout my time at college, I always had the idea I would work on Wall Street. When I graduated in 2004, I sent out countless resumes, attended career fairs at numerous Universities, traveled to New York to meet with recruiters, but no calls ever came. I took a back office job in Richmond doing data entry for Wachovia Securities since it was on a trading floor. The job was not glamorous and I made little money; however, I had the chance to speak to traders every day. For over a year, I punched numbers into a computer screen, a function that did not require a college education, and spent my free time networking with the traders on the floor until one day they asked me to join the fixed income trading desk. This lasted for only three months since I wanted to be in a larger city so I quit my job and moved to New York. My brother was about to attend Columbia … [Read more...]

Business Students Travel to the Land Down Under

Story submitted by Bianca Dittman. Photo credit: Professor Lance Gentry Before leaving the United States my mind always seemed to be thinking about Australia. I had so many unanswered questions and my curiosity about the country was through the roof. The two days of traveling to get there were both very long, but I would give anything to be able to experience what I did all over again. All of my questions about the amazing country were answered and I learned so much more beyond what I was anticipating! Although it was not a culture shock being in an English speaking land, the people, food, and culture still was very different. Our days in Australia were always filled with activities, and there was never a dull moment in the Land Down Under. We did all the major attractions and visited the must-see sites. Below is a journal entry of what a typical day was like for us. January 7th, 2015 Today was my favorite day so far! Snorkeling and scuba diving in The Great Barrier Reef was … [Read more...]

Business Alumni Return to Campus to Share Advice

UMW Business alums Candace Cross (2014), David Heller (2014), and Keith Kritzberg (2014) returned to campus on February 12, 2015 to talk to current business students about life after graduation. The alums assembled in Lee Hall where Dean of the College of Business, Lynne Richardson, moderated the panel discussion. Cross, newly promoted to a recruiting position at Attentive.ly, a software company,  encouraged students to start job hunting no later than the beginning of their senior year.  Heller, currently in futures trading, suggested that students interact with their professors more by asking career advice and about networking. He emphasized that the College of Business alumni mentorship program and events like speed networking helped him prepare to become a competitive job candidate. Kritzberg, an account executive at Bloomberg BNA, expressed that his Business Communications class at UMW was essential in preparing him for life after graduation. He used LinkedIn and attended the … [Read more...]
