We are looking for a mission-driven intern eager to apply financial analytical skills and motivated to grow professionally with a Richmond Top Workplace employer. This individual will gain real world auditing experience in a government environment through a hands-on internship opportunity, exploring the diversity of state government, with a focus on local government, while developing new skills. We are looking for an individual to collaborate and professionally thrive with our team in a hybrid work environment based in Richmond. The Auditor of Public Accounts {APA) is the legislative external auditor for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s executive and judicial branches. Our mission is to serve Virginia citizens and decision makers by providing unbiased accurate information and sound recommendations to improve accountability and financial management of public funds. Interns will gain experience performing financial audits, participate in professional development and audit training, and collaborate on a project supporting the APA’s strategic plan. Program Details
• $25/hour
• Committed to work 15-20 hours per week
• Input and verify financial data received from localities to assist with the compilation of APA local government special reports including the Comparative Report and Fiscal Distress Monitoring Report
• Research unique reporting guidelines and local government audited financial statements and apply understanding of concepts during review over locality financial data
• Independently manage assigned tasks, adhering to established deadlines
• Demonstrate critical, analytical, and creative problem-solving skills, initiative, and professional judgement
• Maintain a questioning state of mind and exercise professional judgment while evaluating financial data
• Demonstrate active engagement while enhancing professional skillset and gaining knowledge of government auditing
Minimum Requirements
• Enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree or Postbaccalaureate certificate in accounting, finance, or related business field
• Must be in good academic standing
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team, while remaining engaged in multiple projects
• Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software, including Word & Excel
• Valid driver’s license and ability to provide own transportation
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Summer Internship Employment Opportunity
POSITION: AUDIT INTERN
LOCATION: Department of Internal Audit, Virginia Beach City Public Schools
SALARY: $20.00/hr.
Description: There are up to four temporary full-time positions available from approximately early June 2025 – mid-August 2025. Interns will assist in conducting School Activity Fund Audits and other audits as necessary. Candidates selected are required to provide own transportation for in-city travel; mileage reimbursement provided. Applicants applying for this temporary position should be rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students majoring in business, preferably accounting.
Education Requirement: Mandatory 2.0 GPA and cumulative 2.5 GPA in major. Successful candidates must
demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Your work history and educational experiences should reflect evidence of such skills. Computer skills required, specifically Microsoft Office Excel and Word. A demonstration of computer and communication skills will be required at the time of interview.
