Jin Wong ’97 Visits with Students and Imparts Valuable Advice

Jin Wong ‘97 returned to Mary Washington as the keynote for the UMW Athletics Gala on Thursday, May 19. That same day he stopped by the College of Business to speak with a class of business students.  Wong is the Assistant General Manager of Baseball Administration for the Kansas City Royals. Jin Wong is in his 17th season in the Royals organization and second as Assistant General Manager. He joined the Royals as Scouting Operations Coordinator in 2000, was promoted to Manager of Scouting Operations in 2001, Manager of Baseball Operations in 2002, Director of Baseball Operations in 2004 and Director of Baseball Administration in 2006. Wong assists GM Dayton Moore in strategic planning as it relates to contract negotiations, salary arbitration matters, and roster management. College of Business Launches Women in Business Program

The College of Business introduced a Women in Business initiative for the spring 2016 semester. Business faculty nominated several upper-level female business students for the program. Of those nominated, twelve students were selected to participate in the program: Anna Brauch, Emily Coffman, Jillian Ferguson, Hillary Lebedun, Jessica Ledford, Janet Phimmasone, Melisa Pilipovic, MacKenzie Plaia, Kristen Ramey, Jessica Sandifer, MacKenzie Smith and Paige Weinberg. The group of junior and senior business majors attended a lunch meeting once per month during the spring 2016 semester. Each luncheon featured a guest speaker who shared their career path and presented on various professional development topics. Speed Networking Event Brings Students and Area Businesses Together

The Fredericksburg Regional Alliance and the College of Business co-hosted its eighth Speed Networking event on February 9, 2016 in Woodard Hall, new home to the College of Business.  Business students from the University of Mary Washington connected with the local business community. Students brought their resumes and business cards provided by the College of Business and were able to speak with area business professionals at the table during the networking event. Business participants included leaders from the Coldwell Banker, Professional Solutions Delivered (ProSoDel), GEICO, United Global Group, Sim Ventions, Life Care, small business owners, alumni and more. In addition to the students, College of Business Dean Lynne Richardson moderated the speed networking portion.  Dean Richardson was joined by Associate Dean Ken Machande, Professor Woody Richardson and Andrea Cordray from the COB. Business Professor Receives Second Prestigious Fulbright Specialist Award

Mukesh Srivastava, professor of management information systems in the College of Business, was awarded his second Fulbright Specialist grant in less than four years.  Dr. Srivastava spent October 2011 in Tunisia as part of a Fulbright Specialist grant for 2011-12, where he developed a graduate program in management and information technology for the Tunis Business School at Tunis University. “Indeed, it was an honor and delight to be selected to serve twice as a Fulbright Specialist to promote linkages between U.S. scholars and professionals and their counterparts at host institutions overseas, engaging in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions in over 140 countries worldwide”, said Dr. Srivastava. He was selected for a second Fulbright grant in the spring of 2015. During the month of June he visited FPT University in Vietnam. Speed Networking

By: Paige Anne Weinberg, College of Business Major Where were you on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.?  For over 20 College of Business (COB) juniors and seniors, the answer would be "Speed Networking at the Anderson Center".  Co-hosted by the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance (FRA) and the University of Mary Washington's College of Business, student participants were given the opportunity to meet with representatives of companies and organizations such as Liberty Tax Service, GEICO, ACI Health, and many others. Each round of networking was approximately three minutes. At the end of a round, the students would shift to the next seat for a round with another company representative. After the speed networking portion of the evening, students and the company representatives continued to network in a less formal setting, allowing students to speak to each employer that attended. Bryan Campbell ’06

By: Paige Anne Weinberg, College of Business Major  UMW Business Alumni Bryan Campbell (2006) was enthusiastic to answer questions about his journey since leaving Mary Washington. A Senior Manager with Dixon Hughes Goodman (DHG), a CPA firm with over 1,800 professionals, Campbell was recently honored as “Top 5 Under 35” by the Virginia Society of CPAs. He and his wife, Jennifer, also a UMW alumna, are the proud parents of two amazing little girls, Paige and Avery. He also serves as the President of the Business Consortium for Arts Support, is an advisory board member for Montero Medical Missions and is the immediate past Vice President of Toby’s Dream Foundation. “Working with non-profits, whether it is serving on a board or volunteering your time, is a great way to make a difference to organizations focused on improving communities,” said Campbell. Keeping an Open Mind Makes for a Memorable Internship Experience

By Todd Desgrosseilliers, College of Business major The end of freshman year is a stressful time for every student. Preparing for final exams and writing papers is the norm. For me, the end of freshman year also meant trying to figure out what I would be doing that summer. I knew I wanted to get my feet wet with some real work experience and gain some skills that would help me after graduation, but I was not quite sure how I would go about doing that. So, I spent that last few months of the semester trying to get out as many internship applications as I could, which was not an easy task since so many of the places I wanted to intern at only accepted students who were juniors or seniors. Fortunately, I was offered an opportunity to interview and was offered an internship with C-SPAN in Washington, DC.
