2011-2012 Executive-in-Residence

Thomas P. Nerney was UMW's 2011-2012 Executive-in-Residence. Nerney is the Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of United States Liability Insurance Group (USLI). Located in Wayne, Pa., the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Nerney earned a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from The Haub School of Business at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pa., and he was inducted into The Haub School of Business Hall of Fame in April of 2009. He earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation from the American Institute of Property and Casualty Insurance in Malvern, Pa., and subsequently was presented the Franklin Award for outstanding achievement and contributions to the insurance industry by the Philadelphia Chapter of the CPCU Society in 2008. 2012 Guest Moderator

John F. Chappell, former Chairman of  Worldwide Pharmaceuticals for SmithKline Beecham, will serve as guest moderator for the 2012 Executive-in-Residence breakfast. Mr. Chappell served in executive management from 1962-1990 with SmithKline Beecham. As Chairman of Worldwide Pharmaceuticals, he was responsible for a $4-billion revenues prescription pharmaceutical division operating in 60+ markets. He has also served as Director for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (1988-1990), Industrial Biotechnology Association (BIO) (1989-1990), and Salix Pharmaceuticals (1990-present). In 1990, he founded Plexus Ventures as a vehicle for investing in early stage biopharmaceutical companies. In 2000, wishing to devote more time to investing activities, he divested Plexus Ventures to his colleagues who continue to operate the business from offices in Fort Washington, Pa., and the United Kingdom. 2010-2011 Executive-in-Residence

Robert Nutting served as UMW's Executive-in-Residence in November of 2010.  He holds numerous titles in diverse corporate entities and local and national charities. Professionally, he is chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a major league baseball team in Pittsburgh, Pa.; president and chief executive officer of Ogden Newspapers Inc., a diversified media corporation headquartered in Wheeling, W. Va.; and president and chief executive officer of Seven Springs Mountain Resort, a family-friendly vacation destination in Seven Springs, Pa. Nutting actively supports philanthropic endeavors both personally and professionally. He is chairman of the Pirates Charities, which offers support to more than 2,000 community organizations.
