The event was the second of a 12-month series titled, Building Better Business (BBB). UMW’s Small Business Development Center and the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce partnered with the College of Business this year to present monthly business topics delivered by College of Business faculty to members of the business community. Martinette, who teaches graduate and undergraduate marketing classes at UMW, targeted his talk to practitioners. He blended his real world experience with academic theory to discuss ways to create an effective marketing plan.

The next BBB event, Customer Service 101A, will be held March 15 at the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce. The speaker will be Dr. Lynne Richardson, Dean of the College of Business.

By Clarke Birrell

What is it like to be the newest academic college at Mary Washington?

The College of Business is still in its infancy. We are going through the process of defining who we are and what we are going to be.

Formally establishing the COB was a painful process for the faculty. The difficulties of the transition occurred when we merged the two existing programs. The new program had a different vision and mission than the two initial programs. This is what made the transition fairly painful, but it was one that we have made as effectively and efficiently as possible.

After receiving your Ph.D. in Social Psychology (1987) from the University of Cincinnati, what did you do next?

After I finished my masters program, I took an internship at General Electric, which led to a full-time job working as an internal consultant. While at GE, I finished my dissertation work. I worked there for 8 years and in 1987 I started looking for academic jobs. That search eventually led me to UMW.

What Motivated You to Become a Teacher?

I am motivated to teach because I want to help students grow academically and personally by passing on lessons learned. Hopefully they don’t make some of the same mistakes or carry some of the misconceptions that I had when I was their age.

Generally, I feel that my motivation draws from helping create a future that is better than the past. I think that is the objective of every teacher.

What should every Mary Washington student understand about their school?

I think Mary Washington students don’t realize what a good education they are getting until they graduate and encounter students from other schools. Part of what students don’t like about UMW is the workload and the intensity. In the end, this rigor is what sets you apart from other college graduates.

Also, a greater emphasis should be placed on understanding the importance of Mary Washington’s influence on George Washington. If George is the father of the nation, she is the grandmother. Her impact on him is part of what led George to be such a great leader. I don’t think we spend enough time recognizing her.

What has been the best advice you received?

Get out of your own way. People succeed or fail mostly because of themselves. The thing that is most problematic to moving forward is you.

Another valuable piece of advice is to keep growing. Quoting from Bob Dylan, “He not busy being born, is busy dying.” That means you often have to throw away something you hold near and dear in order to move forward.

What are your thoughts on the Mentorship Programs, Learning Journeys, Career Chats, Speed Networking, Executive-In-Residence offered by the COB? How can students make the most of these opportunities?

Simply, they are what you make of them. If students choose to take advantage of them, they are of value and if they don’t, they are not.

We have been fortunate to have some really interesting Executives-In-Residences visit Mary Washington during my time. Any one of them knows their specific business in depth. You can learn a lot from listening to their career paths and stories.

Dean Richardson, of the COB, has brought in many new programs since her arrival. I feel that these new programs have been really good for establishing the identity of the college and creating new opportunities.

What has been your most memorable moment at Mary Washington?

Walking on campus the first day as a professor. My initial thought was that this was the most beautiful campus I have seen and hoped that I would get the opportunity to spend my career enjoying the beauty!

What inspires you?

I find nothing more exciting and inspiring than learning something new. Inspiration for me is something that is challenging and pushes my own boundaries. For example, jumping out of an airplane, getting a Ph.D., or learning a martial art.

Do you have any suggestions for current COB students?

          1) Chase your passion. Business teaches you a tool kit that you can apply to anything. Apply it to your passion. Business doesn’t make you happy, your passion does.

          2) Know your own measure of happiness. If you can do what you love and make money while doing it, it just doesn’t get any better than that!

          3) If you are stuck and lose your passion, then go and find it again, even if that means starting all over again.

She explained that it was important for a new employee to come to work early and not just clock in every day. Bond, a Customer Development Intern at NPR, suggested students find out what it is they want to do and not waste too much time in a job that doesn’t hold their interest. Walter, an Auditor at Robinson Farmer Cox & Associates, claimed that it was important to work hard to be competitive. Donohue, the organizer of the event, works as a Communications Consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton. He emphasized networking as a way to find lucrative opportunities.

The University of Mary Washington and the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce are committed to helping the Region’s business community grow and thrive. The UMW Center for Economic Development, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the UMW College of Business are proud to present a year-long seminar series that will go back to the basics. Each seminar will be taught by one of UMW’s expert faculty and will provide attendees with a well-rounded education on the most important business topics. UMW’s College of Business focuses on “engaged learning” and each seminar will follow that philosophy. Many of the sessions are sold out.

It was a fabulous opportunity for the UMW College of Business to connect with the local business community. Students brought their resumes and were able to connect with every business professional at the table during the networking event. Business participants included leaders from the Free-Lance Star, Mary Washington Healthcare, GEICO, PermaTreat Pest Control, small business owners and more. Students in attendance included Clarke Birrell, Paul Rowane, Jaclyn Ramsey, Julianne Sweat, Wesley Host, Kristie Sov, Kathleen Kutnak, Gennaro Trotta and Pamela Okyere. College of Business Dean Lynne Richardson moderated the event, and was joined by Dr. Gail Brooks, Dr. Nichole Phillips, Janet West, and COB Associate Deans Ken Machande and Kim Kinsley.

Student Sarah Healy says “It was wonderful to see how the things we discuss in class can be applied to real-life businesses. Getting to see the theories from our textbooks at work right in front of our very eyes, from start to finish, was invigorating. It almost felt as though we were stepping into something we read about for class. I would recommend this trip, or any similar, to everyone I know, and even to people I don’t. It was so wonderful.”

“ The ART (Applied Rapid Technologies) Company is an innovative business organization that can design almost anything using large 3D printers” says student Maddie Carinci. She continues, “Many of us are unfamiliar with this business, which is right in Fredericksburg, but some of the examples of their work include cell phone cases, sports equipment, and even props for a Hollywood movie. Although the props were never utilized in the movie, we use many of their other items on a daily basis. This company seems like it would be a great business to become involved with because of it’s time saving, cost efficient, and creative ideas. The Applied Rapid Technologies company definitely has a promising future!”

More information about ART can be found on their website at http://www.artcorp.com/.
