Students Visit San Francisco and Meet Business Alumni during Spring Break

image 02Ken Machande, associate dean for faculty with the College of Business, accompanied a group of business students on a spring break trip to San Francisco. During the trip seven students explored the city and met with two area business alums.

Doug Dolton ’78 is the chairman and CEO of San Francisco Motorsports, a luxury automotive retailer based out of Northern California. Dolton shared information about the company’s history and strategy for continued success.  He then led an afternoon tour of the California Film Institute (CFI), where he serves on its board of directors.  The students met with Patty Carlson, CFI director of finance and operations.  Carlson answered questions and discussed the structural differences between for-profit and non-profit organizations.

Iris Harrell ’69 also welcomed the group to Harrell Remodeling, a full-service design and build residential remodeling contractor based in Mountain View, California. Harrell’s company has thrived for more than 25 years and was recently named one of the top 50 winning workplaces by Inc. Magazine. The group met with Harrell, toured the facilities, and asked several questions. Katie O’Connor, a junior in the College of Business, enjoyed meeting Dolton and Harrell.  “It’s exciting to see how the careers of business alumni develop so much from their time at UMW until now,” she said.

This was one of two faculty-led trips during spring break. Smita Jain Oxford, senior lecturer for the College of Business, led a group of students on a spring break trip to India as part of her business communication course.
